Food/Nutrition
We have found that the diet of our dogs is directly related to all other areas of health. We have never had a bulldog with skin issues, ear problems, breathing issues etc. We feed our dogs a "home made dogfood". We have found through research that a diet without soy, wheat, or corn is healthiest for the bulldog. Where there are a few products on the market that do not contain these things we add fresh natural supplements; daily our dogs have eggs, bananas, yogurt, vegetables (celery, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes etc.) and a protein source of either high quality dog food without soy, wheat or corn, and we often cook a whole chicken/turkey for our dogs, and cut it up into tiny pieces (make sure there are no bones). Our dogs have access to fresh cool water at all times. We also give all our dogs a NuVet Plus™ tablet dailey, and an additional calcium tablet for our pregnant and lactating mommies.
Exercise/Play
Well, most English Bulldogs get enough exercise from a walk to the mail box, however, we walk all of our dogs around our yard several times a day. Our dogs are very muscular and Maggie, Sweet P, and Exxon actually need longer walks daily so we take them to the beach or store. Every dogs' needs vary.
Care
Bulldogs are typically couch potatoes they love to sleep beside their "person" they will often sleep much more than other breeds and napping is really important. We watch our dogs for panting and use either fans or air conditioning to keep them from overheating. Bulldogs love the water but most can NOT swim, a kiddie pool filled with fresh water works great for them in the summer. Bulldogs need to be dryed thoroughly (from bathing, rain or pool parties)or they can develop skin irritation.
We also clean out their rolls daily with a cloth or we use a wipe product for tear stains. We also create a mixture for the wrinkles that takes out dark stains from the tear area that is peroxide and corn starch based. We have also started using Ivory soap with warm water and this works very well. We bath our dogs monthly and use an oatmeal based pet shampoo. We have started giving our pups NuVet Plus™ as well when we noticed our Scotchie and Sweet P were tired and excessively shedding after having pups and this helped them tremendously since then we give NuVet Plus™ to all of our dogs. If you are interested in purchasing NuVet Plus™ look on our site for the link or call us and we can help you place an order.
What You Need to Know Before You Purchase a Pet
Before you purchase a pet make sure you do your research. We have paid for 2 dogs we never received. We believe that everyone has good intentions, however, there is little protection for those purchasing over the internet, through pay pal or even those that pay long before receiving the dog. Check out breeders on the Better Business Bureau and etc. Always GET REFERENCES!! Also paypal only provides protection for a limited time and if the purchase is done in a one lump sum, it will not cover a deposit then full payment. Do some research, visit the breeder if you can (look around see the outside and inside living conditions), or have someone you trust visit them. Many people with dogs claim they are from champion bloodlines if that is something you are concerned about ask to see the pedigree on the parents and make sure you get your paperwork when you get the dog, we have waited months/years on some dogs for paperwork. Many breeders do not post this information online anymore as it can be copied and used by scammers, however, if you are visiting a breeder you should be able to see that paperwork. Dog scams have become more and more prevalent and we went through a lot of heart ache expecting our "show quality pup(s)" that we never received, not to mention the money and time we lost. A big give away of scams is someone with multiple kennel names, regardless of the reasons it is usually hiding something or in an effort to scam through another name. MOST IMPORTANT - Visit the breeder, get references, and make sure you pay for the dog when you receive it not weeks beforehand. Also, ensure that they are licensed by their state, this will help regulate cleanliness standards and amount of dogs allowed to an area, if they say they do not have the license or are unwilling to give you the license number find another breeder. If they are re-selling dogs this requires a USDA license and you want to see this license to ensure your puppy purchase is legal. Find out where the dog came from, and contact the original breeder, this sort of transaction contributes to puppy mills. Question everything.
